The ATHENA Leadership Award

The ATHENA Leadership Award is presented to an individual who has been nominated by community members and chosen by a non-partial committee of community leaders for her professional excellence, community service and for actively assisting women in their attainment of professional excellence and leadership skills.

Today, the award nomination process is administered by the Burleson Area Chamber of Commerce and presented during the annual Chamber Awards Banquet. It’s underwritten by Texas Health Huguley Hospital.

Coming Together to Make a Difference

The Burleson Area Chamber of Commerce and Forrest Chevrolet first presented The ATHENA Award in 1992. During the next ten years, these award winners realized that by combining resources and working together for a common goal, they could reach further into the community to help Johnson County cancer patients, their families, and caregivers.

As a result, the ATHENA Society of Burleson was formed in October 2003. Membership is optional for award winners who choose to remain active in the community and pay the annual $20 dues. Award winners may choose to become inactive (Emeritus Member) for various reasons but may change their membership status at any time by paying dues and helping with the fundraising efforts.

Partnering to Make a Difference

Our joint passion is to assist Johnson County cancer patients, their families and caregivers with the special needs they have. There are services other than medical treatment that can provide some comfort and peace of mind to patients as they battle cancer.

The ATHENA Society of Burleson works cooperatively with its recipients to administer these programs for uninsured and underinsured residents.

Our Mission

Our mission is to assist women in realizing their full leadership potential, to participate in the community by contributing time and energy to improve the quality of life for others, and to serve ethically, with dignity, grace and sensitivity.

To meet our mission, the ATHENAS actively seek ways to assist women and provide services for families dealing with cancer.

Some of the ATHENAS have assisted by sharing workplace knowledge on various topics, and by providing internships where women can practice their newly learned skills.

In addition to this program, The ATHENA Society of Burleson donates to the Burleson Opportunity Fund that provides scholarships for students at our local junior college. These activities align with our mission of assisting women to realize their leadership and educational potential.
